The catalyst consists of precious metals such as platinum, rhodium, and palladium, with one of these materials coated onto a substrate to form the catalyst. Three-way catalysis refers to the process of converting harmful gases in automotive exhaust into harmless carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen through oxidation and reduction reactions.

An stainless steel housing is installed in the vehicle's exhaust system, inside which the catalytic converter is placed. The automotive catalyst within the converter uses a honeycomb-structured ceramic or metal as the substrate. The inner surfaces of the honeycomb are coated with an active coating composed of three components: Al₂O₃, rare-earth-based materials, and a small amount of precious metals. Catalysis is then accomplished through these precious metals.

The three-way catalytic converter is the most important external purification device installed in the automotive exhaust system. It converts harmful gases such as CO, HC, and NOx in vehicle exhaust into harmless carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen through oxidation and reduction reactions.
